A recent survey reveals that middle-aged non-homeowners, not younger generations, are losing hope of ever buying a house. Over 50% of Brits aged 35 to 54 who don’t own a home believe they may never afford one. In contrast, only 21% of 18 to 34-year-olds share this concern.
The survey highlights key barriers to homeownership: the high cost of living, soaring property prices, and the overwhelming complexity of the market. Many would-be buyers feel so discouraged that they’ve stopped looking altogether.
Ben Merritt of Yorkshire Building Society, which commissioned the survey, expressed concern over these findings but emphasized that there are still solutions available to help potential buyers enter the market.
